In the interim - so, the graphics card finally started locking up the system.  Out it came, and in went the old Nvidia.  Took a dog's age to find and install the drivers (apparently Nvidia doesn't bother with drivers for cards that older but they are still selling).

Overall - blah.  Tired and frustrated.
